Making Pine Pitch Salve
I harvested some pitch from one the Ponderosa Pine tree on the hillside behind my homestead. Pine trees fight off diseases with their own sap, which is antimicrobial.
It makes sense that the resin has similar effects on us, fighting bacteria and fungus, and drawing out splinters and the poison on bug bites. It's also good for sore muscles. I did try it on a sore wrist that hurt enough to keep wrapped. But after one night with the salve, it was back to normal. It's perfect for my achy shoulders after a long day.
After cleaning the bits of bark off, I slowly melted the pitch in organic sunflower oil and organic olive oil, and let the oil infuse for a couple of weeks. Then I strained the oil and reheated slowly so I could add the natural beeswax.
I love the smell - it's like having the sunny warm Ponderosa Forest in your hands.
